HM Submarine E49 came into service in December 1916. On 12th March, 1917 she left Balta Sound in the Shetland Isles on a routine patrol when she hit a mine laid by the German submarine UC-76. She immediately sank with all hands lost, including George Harris, and now lies 30 metres down with her bows blown off.
